Solar + EV + Heat Pump Load Calculation
Example: 2,500 sq ft home with:
- Base load: 80A (air conditioner, appliances, lights)
- EV charger: 48A (60A breaker)
- Heat pump: 30A
- Solar inverter: 40A backfeed breaker
Total: 198A → Need 200A+ panel (upgrade from 150A)
NEC Requirements for Panel Upgrades
- NEC 230.79(C): Service disconnect must be rated for service size
- NEC 230.42(A): Service conductors sized to service ampacity
- NEC 240.24: Panel must be readily accessible, not in bathroom/closet
- NEC 110.26: Clear working space 30" wide × 36" deep × 78" tall
- NEC 230.62: Service equipment must be marked as service disconnect
- NEC 705.12: PV interconnection requires dedicated breaker, end of busbar rule
Solar Interconnection Rules (NEC 705.12)
When adding solar to an existing panel, the NEC has specific rules:

120% Rule Example: 200A panel with 200A main breaker → Max solar breaker = (200 × 1.20) - 200 = 40A. For a 7.6 kW inverter (32A), this works. For a 10 kW inverter (42A), need a panel upgrade or line-side tap.
