The Right Wire for the Run
PV wire (USE-2) is sunlight-resistant and rated for 600V to 2kV DC array runs; THHN-2 belongs inside conduit on the AC side. Undersized wire is the most common DIY failure — keep voltage drop under 2% on long runs, which often means stepping up one or two AWG sizes from the ampacity minimum. Copper for final terminations, aluminum for long service feeders where code allows, and always torque lugs to spec.
Pro Tips
- PV wire and USE-2 outdoors and in arrays; THHN in conduit
- Keep voltage drop under 2% on runs over 50 feet
- 10 AWG PV wire is the solar industry workhorse
Wire & Cable — Frequently Asked Questions
PV wire or THHN — which goes where?
PV wire (USE-2) is sunlight-resistant and rated for exposed array runs and DC strings. THHN-2 belongs inside conduit on the AC side and in buildings. Never run THHN exposed in an array.
What gauge do I need?
10 AWG PV wire is the solar workhorse for strings under 30A. Size up one or two AWG on long runs to keep voltage drop under 2% — undersized wire is the most common DIY failure.
Do you cut to length?
Yes — most wire sells by the foot or by the reel, so you order exactly what the job needs with no waste. Reels save 15–30% for larger projects.
Copper or aluminum?
Copper for final terminations and most branch circuits; aluminum is code-accepted for long service feeders and saves significant cost at large gauges. Always use listed lugs and antioxidant on aluminum.
