Solar Panel Specifications Decoder: How to Read a Module Datasheet
A solar panel datasheet is dense, but every number maps to real-world energy and reliability. This decoder explains the key specifications — test conditions, temperature coefficients, efficiency, fill factor, bifaciality, and degradation — so you can compare modules apples-to-apples and predict field performance, not just nameplate watts.
STC vs NOCT vs NMOT — Test Conditions Explained
| Condition | Irradiance | Cell temp | Ambient | Wind | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| STC | 1000 W/m² | 25°C | — | — | Nameplate rating, panel-to-panel comparison |
| NOCT | 800 W/m² | ~45°C | 20°C | 1 m/s | Realistic summer output estimate |
| NMOT | 800 W/m² | ~42°C | 20°C | 1 m/s | Modern (IEC 61853) replacement for NOCT |
Temperature Coefficients & Real-World Impact
The Pmax temperature coefficient (e.g. −0.35%/°C) tells you how much power drops per °C above 25°C. Lower magnitude is better.
- PERC: ~−0.35 to −0.37%/°C
- TOPCon (N-type): ~−0.29 to −0.32%/°C
- HJT: ~−0.24 to −0.26%/°C
Worked example: A 500W TOPCon module (−0.30%/°C) at 55°C cell temp (30°C above STC) loses 500 × 0.30 × 30 / 100 = 45 W → ~455W. A PERC at −0.36%/°C loses 54W → 446W. Over a hot summer, that 9W/module difference compounds across the array.
Efficiency, Fill Factor & What Matters
- Module efficiency: STC power ÷ (area × 1000 W/m²). A 500W 2.38 m² module = 21.0%. Higher efficiency = more watts per square foot — critical on small roofs.
- Fill factor (FF): (Vmp × Imp) ÷ (Voc × Isc). FF > 0.78 is good; lower FF signals internal resistance losses and weaker quality.
- What actually matters: For most installs, $/W and the 25-year warranty matter more than the last 0.5% efficiency. Efficiency dominates only when roof area is the binding constraint.
Bifacial Gain Calculations
Bifacial modules produce extra power from the rear side. The bifaciality factor (0.65–0.85) is the rear-to-front power ratio. Realized bifacial gain depends on ground albedo and mounting height:
| Surface | Albedo | Typical bifacial gain |
|---|---|---|
| Grass | 0.20 | 5–8% |
| Concrete / light gravel | 0.30 | 8–12% |
| White membrane / sand | 0.50 | 12–18% |
| Snow / water | 0.70–0.90 | 18–30% |
Sizing caution: Bifacial gain raises Voc on cold clear mornings. Size strings so worst-case cold Voc (Table 690.7) stays under the inverter max — bifacial arrays have clipped inverters in spring.
Degradation Curves: LID, PID, LeTID
| Mechanism | Cause | Magnitude | Mitigation |
|---|---|---|---|
| LID | Boron-oxygen in p-type PERC under first light | 1–2% year 1 | Choose N-type (TOPCon/HJT); LID-free |
| LeTID | High cell temp + current over time (PERC/TOPCon) | Up to 5% over years | Buy LeTID-tested (IEC TS 63209) modules |
| PID | Voltage-driven sodium ion leakage | Up to 20%+ | Anti-PID inverter, frameless/double-glass |
| Annual (linear) | Wear, UV, microcracks | ~0.4–0.55%/yr after year 1 | Quality Tier-1, half-cut + MBB |
Warranty comparison: PERC ~97.5% year 1, ~85% year 25. N-type TOPCon ~98% year 1, ~87–92% year 25. Read the warranty — not the marketing.
