SolarAPP+ (Automated Permitting)

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) developed SolarAPP+ to automate residential solar permitting. Available in 30+ jurisdictions, it issues instant permits for compliant systems.

Utility Interconnection (Net Metering)

After installation, you must get utility approval to connect to the grid:

  1. Submit interconnection application (before or during installation)
  2. Include system specs, inverter UL listing, and electrical diagram
  3. Utility reviews for safety and grid compatibility
  4. After approval, utility installs bi-directional meter
  5. System can then export excess power to grid (net metering)

Inspection Process

After installation, the local AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) inspects:
