SolarAPP+ (Automated Permitting)
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) developed SolarAPP+ to automate residential solar permitting. Available in 30+ jurisdictions, it issues instant permits for compliant systems.
Utility Interconnection (Net Metering)
After installation, you must get utility approval to connect to the grid:
- Submit interconnection application (before or during installation)
- Include system specs, inverter UL listing, and electrical diagram
- Utility reviews for safety and grid compatibility
- After approval, utility installs bi-directional meter
- System can then export excess power to grid (net metering)
Inspection Process
After installation, the local AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) inspects:
- Electrical connections and grounding
