200-225A Transfer Switches

Match the switch to your main breaker, not your generator. If your main panel has a 200A main breaker (standard in most homes built since the 1990s), you need a 200A service-rated transfer switch for whole-home backup. Homes with 100A service should use a 100A switch instead.

A service-entrance-rated ATS includes a main disconnect and is rated to sit between the utility meter and your panel, replacing the meter-main or main breaker position. That's what enables whole-home transfer. Non-service-rated switches install downstream and typically feed a selected-circuits sub-panel.

Automatic transfer switches use manufacturer-specific control wiring and signaling — a Generac ATS is engineered for Generac generators, Kohler RXT for Kohler, and so on. Match the ATS brand to your generator brand unless the product page explicitly states cross-compatibility. Either — pick the enclosure to match. NEMA 3R models are weather-rated for exterior mounting next to the meter or generator; NEMA 1 models are for garages, basements, and utility rooms. Most whole-home installs use NEMA 3R at the meter location.

A 200A service-entrance installation involves the utility meter, service conductors, grounding electrode system, and an electrical permit with inspection in virtually every US jurisdiction. The NEC requires it, your utility requires it, and your generator warranty may depend on it.
