Charge Controllers

MPPT, in almost every case. MPPT controllers convert excess panel voltage into extra charging current, harvesting 15-30% more energy than PWM — especially in cold weather and with higher-voltage panels. PWM only makes sense for tiny 12V systems where the panel voltage matches the battery. Everything in the Victron SmartSolar, Schneider Conext, and Morningstar MPPT lines here pays for the difference.

Two numbers: amps and volts. Controller amperage must exceed array watts divided by battery voltage, plus 25% headroom — 800W of panels on a 12V bank needs an 80A+ controller (800/12 = 67A). Controller PV input voltage must exceed the array's cold-weather open-circuit voltage, which runs 20-25% above the panel's rated Voc. All modern MPPT controllers in this collection support LiFePO4 — either with a lithium preset (Victron SmartSolar has one) or fully programmable charge profiles (Schneider Conext, Morningstar). LiFePO4 needs no temperature compensation and no equalization; set absorption around 14.2-14.6V and float 13.6V for a 12V bank, or use the preset.

Most controllers auto-detect 12/24V, mid-size units add 36/48V, and the Schneider Conext MPPT 100-600 handles up to 600V PV input for long wire runs on large off-grid arrays. Match the controller's battery voltage range to your bank and its PV input limit to your string design — both are on every product page.

Yes on breakers — code requires overcurrent protection between the array and controller and between controller and battery, sized to conductor ampacity. Monitoring is optional but worth it: Victron's Bluetooth is built in, while Schneider and Morningstar offer remote displays. Budget a few percent of system cost for the balance-of-system parts.

Charge controllers are compact — nearly all ship standard parcel, typically within a few business days. Multi-unit contractor orders may consolidate to a single parcel or small freight shipment. Every unit carries its full manufacturer warranty (Victron 5 years, Schneider 2-5 depending on model, Morningstar 5).
