About Transfer Switches
Transfer Switches for Generator Backup
Safely connect your generator to your electrical panel with transfer switches from PES Supply. Transfer switches eliminate the dangers of backfeeding and allow you to power your home's circuits from a portable or standby generator during outages. Shop trusted brands including Generac, Eaton, Schneider Electric, Reliance Controls, and more.
Transfer Switch Options
- Automatic transfer switches (ATS) for standby generators
- Manual transfer switches for portable generators
- Whole-home 200A service entrance switches
- Sub-panel switches for selected essential circuits
- Inlet boxes and power cords for portable connection
- Load management modules for smart shedding
An ATS pairs with standby generators for seamless, automatic power transfer—no action needed during an outage. Manual transfer switches are an affordable alternative for portable generator owners. All switches are UL-listed and meet NEC requirements for generator interconnection. Never risk dangerous backfeeding again.

Frequently Asked Questions
Automatic or manual transfer switch — what's the difference?
An automatic transfer switch (ATS) monitors utility power, starts your standby generator, and switches the house over in seconds — no one home required. A manual transfer switch requires you to start the portable generator, plug it in, and flip the switch yourself. ATS pairs with standby generators; manual switches pair with portables. The price difference is real, but so is the 2 a.m. convenience.
What amperage transfer switch do I need?
Match the switch to your main breaker for whole-home backup: 200A service needs a 200A service-rated ATS, 100A service needs a 100A switch. For selected-circuit backup with a portable, a 30A or 50A manual switch or inlet box covers 6-10 circuits. The switch rating must meet or exceed the service or circuit load it carries — never undersize.
Is a transfer switch required by code?
Yes. The NEC requires an approved transfer means for any generator connected to a building's wiring — it isolates your house from the grid so your generator can't backfeed and electrocute utility workers. Interlock kits are accepted in some jurisdictions as an alternative, but a listed transfer switch is the universal answer.
Will this transfer switch work with my generator brand?
Automatic switches are brand-paired: Generac ATS with Generac generators, Kohler RXT with Kohler, Cummins with Cummins — the control wiring and start signaling are proprietary. Manual transfer switches are brand-agnostic; any portable generator with the right outlet works. If you're mixing brands, call us before ordering.
Indoor or outdoor rated — which enclosure?
NEMA 3R enclosures mount outdoors next to the meter or generator and are the standard for whole-home service-entrance installs. NEMA 1 enclosures are indoor-only — garages, basements, utility rooms. Match the enclosure to the install location; both are listed in this collection.
Who installs a transfer switch?
A licensed electrician, with a permit and inspection. Service-entrance ATS installs involve the utility meter and service conductors — utilities often require their own coordination to pull the meter. Manual switches for portables are simpler but still panel work: permit, licensed electrician, inspection.
