At 7-12kW a portable generator stops being a tailgating accessory and becomes a real backup machine: heavy, usually electric-start, and normally connected through a manual transfer switch rather than extension cords. This page lists the units we stock in that class.

What to check before ordering

  • Starting watts for pumps and AC compressors, not just running watts
  • Fuel derate: propane and natural gas make less power than gasoline
  • Manual transfer switch and inlet instead of backfeeding
  • Weight and wheel kit - these units are 200-300 lb with fuel
