How to maintain LiFePO4, AGM, gel, and flooded batteries for maximum lifespan

LiFePO4 Battery Maintenance
LiFePO4 batteries require minimal maintenance but benefit from:
- Temperature management: Keep between 32°F and 113°F (0-45°C). Don't charge below 32°F.
- Avoid over-discharge: BMS handles this, but avoid leaving at 0% for extended periods
- Balanced charging: BMS auto-balances cells. Ensure BMS is functioning.
- State of charge: Store at 40-60% if not used for months
- Visual inspection: Check for swelling, damage, loose connections quarterly
- Clean terminals: Use baking soda + water if corrosion appears
AGM/Gel Battery Maintenance
- Never equalize charge AGM/Gel batteries — destroys them
- Keep charged above 50% to extend life (50% DoD max recommended)
- Recharge immediately after use — don't leave discharged
- Check terminals for corrosion monthly
- Avoid charging above 14.4V (AGM) or 14.1V (Gel)
- Store at full charge if not used for extended periods
Flooded Lead-Acid Maintenance
- Check electrolyte level monthly — top with distilled water only
- Check specific gravity with hydrometer quarterly
- Equalize charge every 3-6 months (per manufacturer instructions)
- Clean terminals with baking soda + wire brush
- Ensure ventilation — batteries produce hydrogen gas during charging
- Keep battery box clean and dry
- Torque terminal bolts to spec (typically 8-10 ft-lbs)
