Module Freight Economics: How Shipping Quietly Decides Your Cost Per Watt

Two identical pallets can land at different costs depending on freight class, delivery conditions and how the order is staged. Here is where the money actually goes.

Module Freight Economics: How Shipping Quietly Decides Your Cost Per Watt

Freight is part of the unit cost

Modules are bulky, fragile at the frame edge, and heavy per unit of value. Freight per module often exceeds the difference between brand tiers. Any cost comparison that stops at the module price is comparing the wrong number.

Three variables dominate: pallet quantity, delivery conditions (dock vs liftgate vs residential), and whether the order ships complete or in stages.

What drives landed cost

Variable Effect on cost How to control it
Pallet quantity Full pallets ship at a much lower per-module rate Order in pallet multiples or combine lines
Delivery type Liftgate and residential delivery add accessorials Ship to a commercial dock where possible
Staging Two shipments cost more than one and risk damage Sequence delivery after racking is on site
Packaging and handling Double-stacking and edge damage cause claims Specify no double-stack and inspect at delivery
Distance and class LTL class and distance drive the base rate Quote against the actual ZIP, not the state

The staging trade-off

Shipping everything at once is cheapest per pound, but modules sitting on site before racking arrive are exposed to damage, theft and weather. The honest calculation includes the cost of the risk: if the array is six weeks out, staging the module delivery is often cheaper than replacing broken glass.

Reducing freight cost without adding risk

  1. 1

    Quote against the delivery ZIP

Ask for freight to the actual address with the unloading condition stated. A quote against a state is not a quote.

  2. 2

    Order in pallet multiples

Partial pallets cost disproportionately more and are more likely to be damaged in transit.

  3. 3

Choose the unloading method before ordering

Dock, liftgate or forklift on site - each changes the accessorial and who is responsible at delivery.

  4. 4

    Inspect and document at receipt

Photograph the pallet before signing. Freight claims are decided by the delivery documentation, not by what you find later.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is residential delivery so much more expensive?
Residential addresses typically require liftgate service and often a smaller truck, both of which add accessorials. A commercial dock removes most of that cost.
Can modules be double-stacked to save freight?
Manufacturers generally prohibit it because the frames and glass cannot take the point loads. Damage from stacking is usually excluded from warranty.
Is it cheaper to ship a full container?
At volume, yes - but only if you can receive and store it. For most contractors, pallet freight with staged delivery is the lower-risk economics.
