Whole-Home Standby Generators: 14-22kW Buying Guide
A whole-home standby system is three decisions: the kW class, the fuel, and the transfer switch. The 14-22kW band covers most single-family homes once load management is in the design - shedding the range or EV charger lets a smaller generator carry the service. This page lists the Generac standby units we stock with current pricing.
Selection criteria
- Sizing: Start from the circuits you refuse to lose and their starting watts - well pumps and AC compressors need two to three times running watts.
- Fuel: Natural gas derates output and depends on line pressure; LP carries full output but needs a tank sized for the outage length you care about.
- Transfer switch: Service-entrance rated for most homes; confirm the service rating matches the switch.
- Installation: Permit, pad, gas fitter, electrician, inspection under NEC 702 - and noise rules matter on small lots.
