The EG4 GridBOSS Microgrid Interconnect Device (Part No. EG4MID2P200AV3.1) is a 200A split-phase service entrance rated intelligent power distribution device that consolidates up to ten traditionally separate electrical components into a single NEMA 3R enclosure. The GridBOSS replaces the point of common connection, back-fed breakers, feeder taps, tap breakers, supply-side taps, transfer switches, and dedicated combiner panels for grid-in, grid-out, and generator input — functioning as the central interconnection hub for utility power, up to three 90A hybrid inverters, a generator up to 125A (30kW), four programmable smart/AC-couple ports, and both backed-up and non-backed-up load panels. Designed for 120/240Vac North American split-phase residential and light commercial applications, the GridBOSS is rated at 200A for both backed-up and non-backed-up loads simultaneously, with a 315A internal bus rating and a 22kAIC interrupt capacity. Breakers for smart ports, hybrid inverter connections, and generator input are sold separately.
Replaces Up to 10 Separate Components: The GridBOSS eliminates the need for a separate point of common connection panel, back-fed breakers, feeder taps, tap breakers, supply-side taps, manual transfer switches, and dedicated solar and generator combiner panels — consolidating all of these into one pre-engineered device that is faster to permit, faster to install, and simpler to inspect. EG4 estimates the GridBOSS saves installers up to $7,500 in equipment and labor costs on a typical residential solar-plus-storage project.
200A Service Entrance Rated — Backed-Up & Non-Backed-Up Loads: Unlike many MID devices that require the homeowner to downsize their service or split loads between separate panels, the GridBOSS maintains a full 200A rating for both backed-up and non-backed-up load buses simultaneously — ensuring no reduction in service capacity after installation and eliminating the need for a separate main distribution panel in most residential applications.
4 Programmable Smart / AC-Couple Ports: Four independently configurable ports — rated at 125A, 80A, 60A, and 60A — can each be individually programmed as a smart load shedding port or an AC-coupling input for grid-tied microinverter strings. Smart load ports allow the system to automatically shed non-critical loads (EV chargers, pool pumps, water heaters) during grid outages or low-battery conditions, extending backup duration without manual intervention.
Supports Up to Three 90A Hybrid Inverters + 125A Generator: The GridBOSS provides dedicated connection points for up to three hybrid inverters at up to 90A each — enabling high-capacity multi-inverter parallel systems without external combiner hardware — plus a dedicated generator input rated up to 125A (30kW), with automatic or manual generator control supported through the device's integrated relay logic and five programmable output drivers.
~25ms Automatic Transfer — Grid-Forming Microgrid Capability: Upon grid outage detection, the GridBOSS isolates the system from utility in approximately 25 milliseconds and signals connected inverters to transition from grid-interactive mode to grid-forming (offline) mode — creating a stable local microgrid from battery and solar resources. This near-seamless transfer time prevents interruption of most sensitive electronic loads and eliminates the need for a separate automatic transfer switch (ATS).
8-Circuit Energy Monitoring + EG4 App Integration: Eight onboard energy monitoring circuits provide real-time visibility into power flows across utility input, inverter outputs, generator, and individual load branches — all accessible through the EG4 monitoring app. Five programmable output drivers enable automated control of external contactors, relays, and load management equipment, allowing sophisticated grid-edge automation without additional controllers or gateway hardware.
The GridBOSS sits at the service entrance between the utility meter and the home's load circuits — replacing what would otherwise require a collection of separate panels, transfer switches, and tap hardware. Utility power, hybrid inverter AC outputs, generator input, and smart load circuits all connect to the GridBOSS's internal 315A bus, which the device's relay logic and software manage according to grid status, battery state, and programmed priorities.
Normal Grid-Connected Operation: During normal grid operation, the GridBOSS passes utility power to all load circuits while simultaneously managing solar production from connected hybrid inverters — directing excess generation to charge batteries or export to the grid per the configured operating mode. All four smart ports remain active and fully powered, and the connected hybrid inverters operate in grid-interactive mode, synchronized to utility frequency and voltage.
Grid Outage — Automatic Island & Microgrid Formation: Upon detecting grid loss, the GridBOSS opens its utility relay within ~25ms, isolating the home from the utility and preventing back-feed. Connected hybrid inverters receive the island command and switch to grid-forming mode, establishing a local 120/240Vac microgrid from battery and solar resources. Smart load ports can be automatically de-energized in sequence based on battery state of charge thresholds — shedding non-essential loads first to maximize backup duration for critical circuits.
Generator Integration & Priority Management: When battery reserves reach a configured low threshold during an extended outage, the GridBOSS can signal an automatic start generator through its programmable driver outputs. Generator AC power enters through the dedicated 125A generator input port, is synchronized and managed by the device's relay logic, and is used to recharge batteries and supply loads — all within a single coordinated device that eliminates the need for a separate generator transfer switch or manual intervention.
