The Enphase IQ8X Microinverter (IQ8X-80-M-US) is Enphase's highest-output residential microinverter in the IQ8 series — purpose-built for the latest generation of high-powered 72-cell and 80-cell solar modules with DC input ratings from 320W to 540W. Each IQ8X independently converts the DC output of a single module into grid-compliant 240 Vac / 60 Hz power, performing per-module MPPT across a 43–60V operating range at up to 97.5% peak efficiency. What fundamentally separates the IQ8 series from all prior microinverter generations — and from competing MLPE platforms — is its grid-forming capability: a purpose-built silicon chip running advanced power electronics firmware that allows each IQ8X to autonomously establish and maintain its own AC voltage and frequency reference, independent of the utility grid. This grid-forming architecture enables the IQ8X to operate in four distinct system configurations ranging from standard grid-tied solar through battery-free Sunlight Backup™ to full whole-home energy independence — and to satisfy NEC 2014 through NEC 2023 §690.12 rapid shutdown requirements as UL-listed rapid shutdown equipment with no additional hardware. Backed by more than one million cumulative hours of power-on validation testing and Enphase's industry-leading 25-year limited warranty (with connected IQ Gateway), the IQ8X represents the most capable and flexible module-level power electronics platform available for residential solar installations.
The IQ8X's grid-forming capability enables deployment across four distinct configurations — from a simple grid-tied system to a fully battery-backed home energy independence platform — using the same microinverter hardware in every case.
Grid-Forming Technology — The Only Microinverter That Creates Its Own Grid: Conventional microinverters are grid-following devices — they synchronize their AC output to the utility grid's existing voltage and frequency reference, and when the grid goes down, they have no voltage reference to follow and must shut off. The IQ8X's grid-forming chip operates differently: it generates its own AC voltage and frequency reference independently, allowing it to sustain a stable microgrid island — or form one from zero, starting from a completely de-energized state — during a utility outage. This is the fundamental capability that makes Sunlight Backup™, Home Essentials Backup, and Full Energy Independence configurations possible, and it is implemented entirely in the microinverter hardware itself — no external grid-forming device or special inverter equipment is required beyond the IQ System Controller 2 for system switching.
Sunlight Backup™ — Daytime Power During Outages Without a Battery: When paired with an IQ System Controller 2, the IQ8X enables Sunlight Backup™ — a configuration that allows the system to continue producing and consuming solar power during a daytime grid outage without any battery storage installed. When the grid goes down, the IQ System Controller islands the home's protected circuits, and the IQ8X microinverters form a local microgrid using the solar array as the generation source. Available backup power scales with available sunlight and array size — a system can stably support loads up to approximately 25% of total array capacity in full sunlight. This provides meaningful daytime resilience for essential loads (refrigerator, networking, lighting, device charging) without the capital cost of battery storage.
Per-Module MPPT — Complete Independence from String Mismatch: Because each IQ8X performs its own continuous DC/AC conversion with independent MPPT at the module level, every module in an IQ8X installation operates at its own maximum power point with zero influence from adjacent modules — whether they are shaded, soiled, experiencing output degradation, or mounted on a completely different roof face at a different orientation and tilt angle. There is no string current constraint linking modules, no DC string to design around, and no mismatch loss to calculate or manage. A shaded module produces whatever it can; every other module in the system is completely unaffected. This translates to measurable production gains versus string inverter systems in any installation with non-uniform irradiance across the array — which describes the majority of real-world residential rooftop installations.
NEC 2014–2023 §690.12 Rapid Shutdown — UL Listed, No Additional Hardware: The IQ8X is UL listed as PV rapid shutdown equipment and conforms with NEC 2014, 2017, 2020, and 2023 Section 690.12 rapid shutdown requirements for both AC and DC conductors — covering all current NEC code cycles adopted across U.S. jurisdictions as of 2026. Because microinverters perform DC/AC conversion at the module location, the DC conductors on the roof are inherently limited to module-level voltages (79.5V maximum) with no extended high-voltage DC string runs on the rooftop. This satisfies the roof-surface rapid shutdown boundary requirement without any additional initiator devices, conductor-level shutdown modules, or separate rapid shutdown controllers — saving cost, eliminating a potential failure point, and ensuring code compliance from the first installation day without any hardware additions as jurisdictions update to newer NEC cycles.
Enphase App & IQ Gateway — Per-Module Monitoring from Anywhere: Every IQ8X communicates production telemetry — real-time AC power output, voltage, frequency, and operating temperature — to the IQ Gateway via the Enphase proprietary power line communication (PLC) protocol over the existing AC branch circuit wiring, requiring no additional signal cables or wireless transceivers at any microinverter. The IQ Gateway aggregates all microinverter data and forwards it to the Enphase cloud platform, accessible through the Enphase App on iOS and Android. From the app, homeowners and O&M teams can view the real-time and historical production of every individual module, receive fault alerts, track storage charge status, and remotely update microinverter firmware — providing complete system visibility and management without requiring a site visit for any non-physical maintenance task.
1 Million+ Hours of Testing — Industry-Leading 25-Year Warranty: Enphase validates each IQ8 generation through more than one million cumulative hours of power-on testing across thermal cycling, humidity, vibration, voltage stress, and accelerated life test protocols before production release — a validation program scale that directly underpins Enphase's confidence in offering a 25-year limited product warranty on the IQ8X. The 25-year term is conditional on installation with an internet-connected IQ Gateway, which enables Enphase to remotely monitor system health, push over-the-air firmware updates, and detect potential failures before they escalate — a connected warranty model that aligns Enphase's incentives with long-term system performance rather than simply reactive defect replacement.
The IQ8X mounts directly under each solar module on the racking rail and connects to the module's MC4 output connectors via integrated input cables. The microinverter's AC output connects to the next microinverter in the branch via an Enphase AC cable, forming an AC branch circuit that runs to the combiner box or load center — with no high-voltage DC string wiring on the roof beyond the short module-to-microinverter connections.
DC/AC Conversion at the Module: The IQ8X accepts DC input from the module (320–540W, 43–60V MPPT range, 79.5V absolute maximum) and converts it directly to 240 Vac / 60 Hz single-phase AC at the module location. The grid-forming chip continuously regulates output AC voltage and frequency — synchronizing to the utility grid during normal grid-tied operation, or autonomously maintaining the islanded microgrid voltage and frequency reference during a Sunlight Backup outage event — at 97.5% peak conversion efficiency.
PLC Communication Over AC Wiring: Each IQ8X transmits operating data to the IQ Gateway using Enphase's proprietary power line communication protocol modulated onto the same AC branch circuit conductors that carry the microinverter's power output. No additional communication wiring, wireless radios, or conduit is required. The IQ Gateway aggregates all branch circuit PLC signals, decodes per-microinverter telemetry, and forwards consolidated system data to the Enphase cloud via the home's internet connection — completing the monitoring path from module to cloud over existing electrical infrastructure.
Grid Outage Response & Islanding: When the IQ System Controller 2 detects a grid outage, it opens the utility interconnection relay — isolating the home's protected circuits from the grid — and signals the IQ8X microinverters to transition from grid-following to grid-forming mode. The microinverters collectively maintain a stable 240 Vac / 60 Hz island for the home's backed-up loads, with available generation power proportional to real-time solar irradiance and array output. If IQ Batteries are installed, the System Controller coordinates charge/discharge dispatch to balance generation against load demand. When grid power is restored and confirmed stable, the System Controller reconnects the home to the grid and transitions the microinverters back to grid-following synchronized operation.
