Three SKUs, three different jobs. The IQ8 and IQ8+ are residential split-phase units that differ mainly in how much module wattage they can swallow. The IQ8P-3P is a different animal entirely — a three-phase commercial microinverter for 208Y/120V services. Here is how to pick without over-buying or clipping production.

Which one for which job
IQ8 — the budget residential play
The base IQ8 is the right call when the module is 350 W or under and the job is price-sensitive: garage arrays, small retrofits, and add-ons to existing IQ systems. Its 50 V max input caps you at 60-cell / 120 half-cell modules, so do not spec it under modern 72-cell residential glass. Pair it with an IQ Combiner and you have a full monitoring path through the Enphase App.
IQ8+ — the residential workhorse
If you are stocking one microinverter for residential crews, this is it. The IQ8+ accepts 60- and 72-cell modules up to 440 W, which covers virtually every mainstream residential panel sold today. Its 27–45 V MPPT window fits high-voltage half-cell modules, and like the IQ8 it is grid-forming when installed with an IQ System Controller 2 or 3 — so it is the default pick for solar-plus-storage jobs with IQ Battery 5P.
IQ8P-3P — small commercial, three-phase
The IQ8P-3P exists for 120/208 V three-phase services — small commercial buildings, agricultural shops, and light industrial roofs. It drives 475 VA continuous from modules up to 640 W, so it is built for the large-format commercial glass that would max out a residential unit. It requires the IQ Gateway Commercial 2, and the DOM-suffix variant is US-made for projects chasing the ITC domestic content adder. Do not put it on a house — it does not do split-phase 240 V.
Field notes
Mixing models: IQ8 and IQ8+ can share an IQ Gateway on the same site — mixing within the IQ8 generation is fully supported. What you cannot do is add IQ7 units to an IQ8 gateway (or vice versa) without losing IQ8-specific grid-forming features. Keep generations on separate gateways.
Clipping math: a 440 W module on a 290 VA IQ8+ is a 1.52 DC/AC ratio — that is intentional. You will clip a bit at noon in June and harvest more the rest of the year. The same logic applies to the IQ8P-3P at 640 W / 475 VA. Size the ratio to the site’s irradiance, not to the nameplate.
Branch circuits: all three use the standard two-wire IQ Cable with plug-and-play connectors. On the commercial side, check the design guide for max units per 20 A branch at 208 V three-phase — the math is different from split-phase residential runs.
FAQ
Can I mix IQ8 and IQ8+ microinverters on the same system?
Yes. Both are IQ8-generation units and can share the same IQ Gateway and array. What you cannot mix is generations: IQ7 units on an IQ8 gateway (or the reverse) disable IQ8-specific PCS and grid-forming features.
Is the IQ8P-3P a good choice for a house?
No. The IQ8P-3P is a 120/208 V three-phase commercial unit and does not support 240 V split-phase residential services. For homes, use the IQ8 or IQ8+.
Which model do I need for a 450 W panel?
Neither the IQ8 (350 W max) nor the IQ8+ (440 W max) is rated for it. Step up to the IQ8M or IQ8A for high-wattage residential modules, or the IQ8P-3P if the site is three-phase commercial.
Do these microinverters work during a grid outage?
