Frequently Asked Questions

What's included in a complete solar kit?

Kits bundle the components that must work together: solar panels, inverter(s), racking, and typically wiring, breakers, and monitoring hardware. Exact contents vary by kit — every kit listing details its bill of materials on the product page. Battery-based kits add storage; grid-tie kits skip batteries. Read the BOM before ordering and call us if anything's unclear.

Grid-tie, off-grid, or hybrid kit — which do I need?

Grid-tie kits are the lowest-cost path to offsetting your utility bill — no batteries, power sells back through net metering where available. Off-grid kits include batteries and a battery-based inverter for properties with no utility. Hybrid kits combine both: grid connection plus battery backup when it fails. Buy hybrid if outages matter, grid-tie if they don't.

What size kit does my home need?

Pull 12 months of utility bills and find your annual kWh. Divide by your local peak-sun-hours (roughly 1,200-1,800 kWh per kW per year across most of the US) to get target system kW. A home using 12,000 kWh/year in a 1,500-sun-hour region needs about an 8kW kit. Roof space and budget then set the final number.

Do kits include everything for permitting?

Kits include the major hardware; permits and interconnection are local. Most jurisdictions want a site plan, electrical line diagram, and spec sheets — the spec sheets ship with the equipment, and the line diagram follows from the kit BOM. Your installer (or you, where owner-builder permits are allowed) files with the AHJ and utility.

Can I add batteries to a grid-tie kit later?

Depends on the inverter architecture. Kits built on hybrid inverters (Sol-Ark, EG4 18kPV) accept batteries anytime — it's a wiring and settings change. Kits on grid-tie-only string inverters need an inverter swap or AC-coupled battery system (like a Powerwall or Enphase IQ Battery) to add storage later. If backup is on your 3-year horizon, buy the hybrid kit now.

How do kits ship?

Kits ship as multi-piece freight: panels on pallets, inverter and racking boxed, all LTL with curbside delivery — a full residential kit typically arrives as 1-3 pallets. Delivery appointments and liftgate service are available. Inspect every pallet at delivery and note damage on the freight receipt before signing.
