The right tools turn a two-day install into a one-day install — and keep it code-compliant. This checklist covers every category a solar crew needs: hand tools, power tools, safety/PPE, testing instruments, and organization. Whether you're outfitting a new truck or auditing an existing kit, use this as your master list.

Two rules(1) Calibrate your torque tools annually — NEC 110.14(D) now requires documented torque on electrical connections. (2) Label everything: a torque log and a labelled bin cart prevent rework and failed inspections.

Hand Tools

Power Tools

  • Impact driver (18–20V) — drives lag bolts into rafters, self-tapping racking hardware. Carry 2 batteries + spare.
  • Drill/driver — pilot holes, equipment mounting, conduit straps.
  • Circular saw / track saw — cuts racking rail to length; carbide blade for aluminum.
  • Reciprocating saw — demolition, conduit cuts, old-roof work.
  • Angle grinder — cuts rail, ground rod driving prep.
  • Roofing nailer (optional) — re-fastening shingles after flashing.
  • Hammer drill — concrete anchors for ground mounts.
Battery managementStandardize on one cordless platform across the crew so batteries and chargers are interchangeable on the roof.

Safety & PPE

  • Full-body harness + shock-absorbing lanyard — required for roof work >6 ft (OSHA 1926.501); use retractable lifelines on low-slope roofs.
  • Anchor points / roof brackets — engineered tie-off; never anchor to unprotected vents.
  • Hard hat — below-roof and equipment handling.
  • Cut-resistant gloves — handling modules (glass edges) and sheet metal.
  • Insulated gloves (Class 0) + leather protectors — for energized DC work.
  • Safety glasses / face shield — grinding, cutting.
  • Fall protection kit — harness, lanyard, anchor sling, roof anchor.
  • Sun protection — wide-brim hats, sunscreen, hydration.
  • Steel-toe boots with good roofing traction.

Testing & Commissioning Instruments

Organization & Labeling

  • Label printer (thermal) — NEC 690/705 warning labels, rapid-shutdown, bi-directional meter, string ID.
  • Parts bins / milk crate cart — sort clamps, T-bolts, lugs by type.
  • Magnetic parts tray — prevents dropped hardware on roof.
  • Tool belts / pouches — keep frequently-used tools on the installer.
  • Torque log clipboard / tablet — document every torqued connection.
  • Stringing / commissioning checklist — printed or app-based.

Code & Compliance Notes

  • NEC 110.14(D) — torque tools required; document values.
  • NEC 690.31 — PV wire securing (6 in on array, 24 in off).
  • OSHA 1926.501 — fall protection above 6 ft.
  • UL 61730 / listed connectors — only use listed MC4-compatible tools and connectors.
