Three decision paths
Path 1 — Keep your Powerwall 2 and expand with Powerwall 2
If your existing Powerwall 2 rides through outages on your critical-loads panel without hitting its 5 kW ceiling, the cheapest capacity upgrade is a second (or third) Powerwall 2 on the same gateway — up to 10 units, 135 kWh total. All units on a site must be the same generation, so stay inside the PW2 ecosystem.
The catch: Tesla no longer sells Powerwall 2 direct, so expansion units come through certified installers or the secondary market. Path 2 — Rip and replace: upgrade to Powerwall 3
Choose this when 5 kW continuous genuinely limits you — a 4-ton condenser, a well pump, an EV charger running during an outage — or when you are adding solar anyway and want the inverter built into the battery. At 11.5 kW continuous with 185 A LRA motor-start, one Powerwall 3 does the work of 2.3 Powerwall 2s on power, and its LFP cells are built for daily cycling.
Budget for a full replacement, not a swap: the Powerwall 3 rewires your backup topology (Backup Gateway 2 or the meter-collar Backup Switch), and your old Powerwall 2 cannot stay on the site. Why the mixing ban matters: Tesla's commissioning software treats a site as one generation. There is no supported configuration with a Powerwall 2 and a Powerwall 3 behind the same gateway, and splitting them across two gateways on one service is not an approved design. If a salesperson suggests "just add a PW3 to your PW2," that quote will die at permitting or commissioning — plan expansion inside one generation or plan a replacement.
Load math before brand loyalty: the honest trigger for upgrading off a Powerwall 2 is sustained load, not capacity. 5 kW continuous covers refrigeration, lighting, networking, a gas furnace blower, and a mini-split — most homes, most outages. Where it fails: central AC above 3 tons, electric resistance heat, EV charging, and well pumps stacked with other loads. Add up your locked-rotor amps before paying for 11.5 kW you may never draw.
Chemistry in the field: PW2's NMC pack is lighter per kWh but degrades faster under daily deep cycling; PW3's LFP is the better daily-cycler and eliminates cobalt thermal-runaway concerns. Warranty terms are identical on paper (10 years, 70% retention, unlimited cycles), so the real LFP advantage shows up in year 6+ capacity curves, not in the warranty document.
