Enphase has long since moved the line to IQ8, and new IQ7 hardware is effectively end-of-life. If one of yours just died, here is the honest map of your choices, with real prices and the compatibility rules that matter.
First: is it really the microinverter?
Before you spend a dollar on hardware, rule out the cheap stuff. In our experience a meaningful share of “dead micro” calls are not the micro at all:
- One panel dark in the Enphase App, neighbors producing — that pattern genuinely points at the microinverter (or its DC connections). Confirm the unit shows as “not reporting” or a production fault, not just low output from shading or soiling.
- Whole array offline — suspect the Envoy/IQ Gateway, a tripped PV breaker, a thrown AC disconnect, or an internet/Wi-Fi outage masquerading as a production failure. Check the gateway LEDs and the breaker panel first.
- Intermittent drops across many units — often a failing trunk-cable connector, water ingress, or a line-communication problem, not a batch of dead micros. Inspect Q Cable connectors before condemning hardware.
- Check the LED on the suspect unit (visible at the rail): the flash pattern distinguishes “not communicating” from “hardware fault” from “grid issue.” A solid diagnostic from the roof saves a wasted RMA.

Compatibility rules that cost money if you get them wrong
- Cabling: same trunk, drop-in. Residential IQ7 and IQ8 microinverters both use the two-wire Q Cable and the same trunk connectors — a replacement IQ8+ plugs straight onto the existing trunk where the IQ7 came off. No re-wiring, no new cable run. (The commercial IQ8P-3P is the exception: it uses the four-wire QD Cable and an IQ Gateway Commercial 2 — a different ecosystem entirely.)
- Mixing generations is supported — with conditions. As of IQ Gateway software 8.2.4401 (November 2025), IQ8 units can be added to an existing IQ7 site on the same gateway, but only in grid-tied configurations: solar-only, solar + IQ Battery 5P (non-backup), or solar + IQ Battery 3T/10T (non-backup). Sites with an IQ System Controller providing backup are excluded.
- It is a one-way street. You can add IQ8 to an IQ7 site. You cannot add an IQ7 to a site that already runs IQ8s on the gateway. Sequence your purchases accordingly.
- Gateway matters. You need an Envoy-S or IQ Gateway with current software. The older Envoy-R (M-series era) does not support IQ micros. Envoy-S units in the field receive software updates automatically — verify the version in the Enphase App before ordering a mixed-gen swap.
- Match the DC connector variant. Part numbers ending “-2-” (e.g., IQ7PLUS-72-2-US, IQ8PLUS-72-2-US) use Enphase’s Q-DCC-2 DC connectors; “-M-” variants use MC4. Swap a -2- for a -2- or plan on adapter cables, or the crew is stuck on the roof.
- Grid-forming features need a full-generation array. Mixed IQ7/IQ8 sites run grid-tied only. Sunlight-backup and battery-backup operation require every PV micro on the site to be IQ8.

Single-unit replacement: a current IQ8+ (IQ8PLUS-72-2-US) is $182.83 — the direct successor for the IQ7+ that anchors most residential arrays. For 60-cell/120-half-cell legacy panels, the base IQ8 is $202.00; for higher-power modules, the IQ8M is $197.94 and the IQ8A is $236.52. Add roughly $5–$25 in Q Cable accessories (sealing caps, terminator, a cut-length trunk piece) if connectors need refreshing.
Like-for-like IQ7: when NOS stock exists, legacy listings run $130.65 (IQ7X) to $172.00 (IQ7A) — cheaper per unit, but supply is the whole question. Ask us what is actually on the shelf this week.
Full retrofit: multiply the per-unit price by your array count — a 24-panel residential array on IQ8+ lands around $4,400 in microinverter hardware. If the site is still on an Envoy-R or a first-gen combiner, budget for a gateway refresh too: a standalone IQ Gateway runs $548.35, and the IQ Combiner 5 with integrated IQ Gateway is $647.00.
Labor reality: a single-unit swap is typically one service visit; a full retrofit on a 20–30 panel roof is a day for a two-person crew. Neither is covered by the Enphase hardware warranty.
The warranty reality for IQ7-era systems
Every IQ7 carried Enphase’s 25-year limited warranty in North America, so a 2018 install is covered into 2043. If Enphase confirms a covered defect, they repair or replace the unit free — using new or reconditioned parts at their option — and the warranty clock does not restart (the replacement is covered for the remainder of the original term, or 90 days from receipt, whichever is later).
What the warranty does not pay for: the labor to uninstall, reinstall, or troubleshoot. That cost lands on you or your installer. Enphase runs a labor reimbursement program for installers in its network, with fixed per-visit and per-unit amounts that vary by product and installer tier — if your original installer is still around and in the Enphase Installer Network, ask them what a covered swap actually bills out at. If your installer is gone (common, seven-plus years in), any Enphase-certified installer can process the RMA, and you shop the labor.
Practical takeaway: if the unit is covered, start the RMA. Can I replace just one failed IQ7 with an IQ8?
Yes, on grid-tied systems. Since IQ Gateway software 8.2.4401 (November 2025), Enphase officially supports IQ8 microinverters on existing IQ7 sites sharing one gateway — for solar-only systems and solar-plus-battery systems without backup. It is not supported on sites with an IQ System Controller providing backup power. The IQ8+ ($182.83 at PES) is the usual drop-in for a failed IQ7+.
Do IQ7 and IQ8 microinverters use the same cables?
