Service equipment is the single most permit-sensitive part of any electrical install. Every AHJ verifies three things at the meter: (1) the meter socket is on the serving utility's approved-devices list, (2) the amp rating matches the load calculation, and (3) the NEMA enclosure rating fits the exposure (indoor NEMA 1 for a garage, NEMA 3R for outdoor, NEMA 4X for coastal salt-fog or industrial washdown). This selector maps the residential and commercial amp bands PES Distribution stocks to the brand catalog and the utility approval lists we most commonly service.

    Residential service equipment — 100 A to 400 A

Modern residential services in the US are almost always 200 A, with 100 A holding on for smaller retrofits (older housing stock, ADUs, garages) and 320/400 A common on any dwelling with EV charging, solar, battery backup, or all-electric HVAC. Amp rating drives the meter socket size, the service-entrance conductor size (NEC 310.12), and the size of the load center behind the meter.

Service amps Typical use Meter socket / meter main Load center (40+ space)
    100 A SFR retrofit, ADU, garage sub Milbank U9800-XL-100, Eaton MBE1224B100BTS, Square D MC0816B1100R QO124M100PC, BR2020B100, P1224B1100CU, TM1220CCUL

⚠ 320-class meters = 400 A continuous — but not all utilities allow the shortcut.

Class-320 meter sockets are rated for 320 A continuous and 400 A intermittent on the utility side, but many AHJs and utilities interpret them as 400 A services requiring 400 A-rated wire (600 kcmil Cu or 1000 kcmil Al). LG&E allows Class-320 on residential up to 400 A; Duke requires a hard 400 A meter main for anything at 400 A continuous. Verify with the utility before ordering.

    Commercial service equipment — 400 A to 1200 A (and switchgear beyond)

Above 400 A the residential meter-main form factor is not available — service equipment shifts to a meter socket + separate switchboard (or the meter is integrated into commercial switchgear). Between 400 A and 1200 A, PES Distribution stocks the Square D I-Line, Eaton PRL, Siemens P4/P5, GE Spectra, and Milbank commercial CT-cabinet lines. Anything above 1200 A is typically factory-built switchgear with a lead time.

Main lug vs main breaker — when to use each

    • Main breaker (MB) — the disconnect is on the panel itself. Required when the load center is the service disconnect (NEC 230.71) — i.e., there's no other means of disconnect between the meter and the load center. Every residential meter-main combo is main-breaker.
    • Main lug only (MLO) — no disconnect on the panel itself; overcurrent protection is upstream (in the meter main or a fused disconnect). Used for sub-panels fed from a downstream feeder, or when the service disconnect is a separate fused switch in a CT cabinet.
    • 2020 NEC 230.71(B) — six-disconnect rule change — now requires a single service disconnect (not the old six-throw rule) for new residential construction. Meter-main combos are the fastest path to compliance.

NEMA enclosure ratings — indoor, outdoor, wet, hazardous

NEMA rating Environment Ingress protection Typical service-equipment application
NEMA 1 Indoor, dry Incidental contact only Interior garage / basement panels
NEMA 3R Outdoor, rain / sleet Rain-tight (louvers acceptable) Standard exterior meter mains and load centers
NEMA 4 Outdoor, splash / hose-down Watertight (no louvers), corrosion-resistant paint Wash-down commercial / restaurant kitchens
NEMA 4X Outdoor + corrosive (salt-fog, chemical) Watertight + stainless / fiberglass Coastal, wastewater, food-processing
NEMA 12 Indoor industrial, dust / oil drip Dust-tight + drip-proof Manufacturing floor MCC / control panels
    NEMA 7 (Class I) / NEMA 9 (Class II) Hazardous locations Explosion-proof / dust-ignition-proof Petrochemical, grain, mining

⚠ NEMA 3R is the residential-outdoor default, but louvered NEMA 3R is not acceptable in flood zones.

Louvered 3R lets driven rain in during hurricane wind. FEMA flood-zone A/AE construction in the Southeast increasingly requires louverless NEMA 3R (marked '3RX' by some brands) or a NEMA 4 upgrade for meter-main combos below Base Flood Elevation + 1 ft. Check the local floodplain ordinance before ordering.

    Utility-approved meter sockets by territory

Every utility publishes an approved-devices list (LG&E/KU calls it the Book of Standards, Duke Energy calls it the Electric Service Requirements Guide). Sockets not on the list will not be sealed or energized. PES Distribution pre-filters the meter-socket catalog by utility territory — the table below maps the most-requested utilities to the sockets we stock for each.

Utility Territory Approved-brand highlights Ring vs ringless
    LG&E / KU Louisville & central KY Milbank U5140-XL-K3L (200 A), U5168-O-K7K (320-class) Ringless standard
Duke Energy IN, OH, western NC, southern KY Eaton MBE2040B200BTS, Square D SC1632D200S Ring type standard

TVA / LPCs TN Valley, northern AL, MS, KY, VA, GA Milbank U5140-XL-K3L, Square D MC0816B1200RCT Ringless (varies by LPC)
Georgia Power Georgia Milbank U5162-XL-K3L, Eaton MBX-Series Ring type
Dominion Energy Virginia, northeast NC Milbank U5168-XL-K3L, Siemens LNW2040B1200CT Ring type
ConEd / National Grid New York, MA Cutler-Hammer 1MB2040RGCH, Milbank R5148-XL Ring + sealing lug
Salt River Project Central Arizona Milbank U5140-XL-K3L, Eaton 3MPP212RRLA (ARC-flash reduction) Ringless

Ring vs ringless meter sockets — what's the difference and why does it matter?

    • Ring type — the meter is held in the socket by a sealing ring bolted around the meter rim. Utility can only re-seal by cutting and replacing the ring. Common in the Southeast and Northeast.
    • Ringless — the meter is held in by the socket's own cover. Utility re-seals by closing a padlock or sealing tab. Common in the Midwest, TVA, and West.
    • Ordering the wrong type is one of the top reasons a service does not pass utility inspection. Verify with the local utility rep before you write the PO.

    How to spec a 200 A residential meter-main combo

    Pull the utility's approved-devices list

LG&E — Book of Standards §2.3. Duke — ESR Guide §300. AEP KY — Terms & Conditions of Service attachment. Confirm the exact model number is on the list; do not substitute.

Pick ring vs ringless to match the utility standard

If the utility runs ringless, order ringless. Do not try to convert. Milbank publishes both variants for every popular part number.

    Choose amp rating and continuous-vs-intermittent

200 A continuous is a 200 A-rated meter main. If EV, PV, and battery load push you past a 200 A calc, jump to 320-class (400 A intermittent) or a hard 400 A meter main — but verify the utility allows Class-320 on a residential service.

    NEMA rating and mounting

NEMA 3R for standard outdoor. NEMA 4 or NEMA 3RX for flood-zone / wash-down. Flush mount requires a specific trim ring — order it with the enclosure, not separately.

Verify service-entrance conductor entry (top / bottom / side)

Most meter mains ship with configurable top / bottom feed. Confirm the conductor entry side matches your service-mast configuration — top feed for overhead service drops, bottom feed for underground laterals.

Order the matching load center or feed-through kit

Some meter-main combos are all-in-one (meter + main + 40 spaces of branch breakers). Others are meter + main only, feeding a separate downstream load center. Order the matching branch breakers (Square D QO, Eaton BR/CH, Siemens QP, GE THQL) in the same PO for consolidated shipping.

    Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between a load center and a panelboard?

Load center = residential-style (1-inch breakers, plug-on bus, up to 200–400 A, up to 42 spaces). Panelboard = commercial construction (bolt-on breakers, higher AIC ratings, up to 1200 A, up to 84 spaces, listed under UL 67). Square D I-Line, Eaton PRL, Siemens P4/P5, and GE Spectra are all panelboards; QO, BR/CH, QP, and PowerMark are load centers.

Do you carry meter mains approved for LG&E in Louisville?

    Yes. Milbank U5140-XL-K3L (200 A residential) and U5168-O-K7K (320-class) are our two most-shipped LG&E-approved sockets. For 400 A hard-rated commercial we stock Milbank MB0816B1400RCT and Square D SC1632D400S. All are in stock for same-day will-call.

    Can I put a 200 A main breaker in a 100 A meter main?

No — the bus and lug ratings are set by the meter-socket ampacity. A 100 A meter main can only accept a main breaker up to 100 A. If you need a 200 A service, you need a 200 A meter main.

How many disconnects can I have at the service?

2020 and later NEC 230.71(B) requires a single service disconnect on new construction for dwellings — the old 'six-throw rule' is out for residential. Commercial services can still have up to six disconnects grouped at the service equipment (230.71(A)).

What's a CT cabinet and when do I need one?

Above 400 A, utilities generally cannot use a self-contained meter — the meter reads via current transformers (CTs) that install inside a separate CT cabinet ahead of the service disconnect. The CT cabinet is sealed by the utility. Common at 600 A and above.

Do PES load centers come with breakers pre-installed?

Some do (main-breaker combos ship with the main breaker installed and 1–2 branch spaces filled). Most branch-breaker spaces ship empty so you can pick AFCI / GFCI / DFCI or standard per your BOM. Bundle-order the whole panel BOM at contractor pricing.

Copper bus vs aluminum bus — does it matter?

Aluminum bus is standard on most residential and light-commercial load centers (Square D QO/HOM, Eaton BR, Siemens P1/P4, GE PowerMark). Copper bus is the premium option — better conductivity, lower temperature rise under continuous load, longer service life. Spec copper on any panel that will run near-continuous 80 %+ load (EV chargers, solar, batteries). PES stocks copper-bus versions of every mainstream residential panel.
