EG4 has become the default value brand for serious off-grid and hybrid solar in North America — aggressive pricing, big PV input headroom, and a modular battery ecosystem that scales from a cabin to a small farm. But the product line is confusing: XP inverters, the 18kPV, three battery families, a Chargeverter, and a GridBOSS that isn't an inverter at all. This guide maps the whole lineup with real specs and current Portlandia Electric Supply pricing (catalog, July 2026), so you can design a system that actually fits together.

The EG4 lineup at a glance (in-stock at PES)

Component Role Key specs (per product data) PES price (July 2026)
    EG4 18kPV (12LV) Hybrid/off-grid inverter 48V split-phase, 18kW PV input, whole-home class $4,888.20
    EG4 12000XP Off-grid inverter 48V, 24kW PV input, 12kW output $2,583.82
    EG4 6000XP Off-grid inverter 8,000W PV input, 6kW output, 48V $1,492.49
    EG4 3000EHV-48 All-in-one off-grid 3kW output, 5,000W PV input $698.60
    EG4 LL-S 48V 100Ah Server-rack battery 5.12 kWh LiFePO4, rack-mount $1,498.75
    EG4 LiFePower4 48V 100Ah V2 Server-rack battery 5.12 kWh LiFePO4 $1,577.80
    EG4 PowerPro WallMount AllWeather Wall-mount battery 48V 280Ah, 14.3 kWh, outdoor-rated $3,692.26
    EG4 Chargeverter GC Battery charger 48V, 100A, 5,120W — generator/grid charging $729.92
EG4 GridBOSS MID V2 Service entrance / microgrid interconnection 200A service entrance $1,995.00

Inverters: which EG4 for which job

6000XP — the cabin and small-home workhorse. Six kW of output runs a modest home's essentials with 8 kW of PV input, so it pairs with 15–20 panels. Parallel up to six units if the homestead grows.

12000XP — the whole-home off-grid answer. Twelve kW continuous with a huge 24 kW PV input ceiling means you can oversize the array for winter and cloudy-day recovery without wasting the inverter's charge capacity. Two in parallel covers large homes with margin.

18kPV — the hybrid flagship: grid-tie behavior with battery backup and off-grid capability in one box, feeding a 200A service through the GridBOSS. Choose this when you want to sell to the grid AND survive outages; choose XP units when the grid isn't invited.

3000EHV-48 — RV, shop, and starter-system territory: 3 kW output and 5 kW PV input in a budget all-in-one.

    Worked example: off-grid home, 15 kWh/day

Design target: 15 kWh daily use, 4 kW peak simultaneous load, three days autonomy. Battery: 15 x 3 = 45 kWh → three PowerPro WallMount 14.3 kWh units (42.9 kWh usable at 100% DoD spec; realistically plan 80–90%). Inverter: one 12000XP — 12 kW output laughs at the 4 kW peak, and 24 kW PV input supports a 10–12 kW array for three-day-recovery charging. PV: 12 kW of modules produces ~48 kWh on a good summer day, ~18–24 kWh in winter — enough with the battery buffer. Total inverter-plus-battery hardware: roughly $13,660 before modules, racking, and BOS. Add a Chargeverter so any 240V generator can bulk-charge the bank at 100A during a dark week — the single best $730 insurance in off-grid.

Worked example: grid-tied whole home with backup

One 18kPV + GridBOSS 200A MID at the service entrance + four LL-S 5.12 kWh rack batteries (20.5 kWh). The GridBOSS handles service-entrance duty and islanding; the 18kPV sells excess solar; the batteries bridge outages and peak-rate windows. Inverter, MID, and batteries: about $12,878 before the array.

Batteries: LL vs. LiFePower4 vs. PowerPro

All three are 48V LiFePO4 with ~6,000-cycle-class longevity, but the form factors drive the decision. LL-S and LiFePower4 are 5.12 kWh server-rack modules — stack them in a rack, parallel up to 16 for ~82 kWh. PowerPro WallMount packs 14.3 kWh in a sealed, outdoor-rated wall cabinet — fewer boxes, cleaner install, all-weather rating. Per-kWh the rack modules usually win on paper; the PowerPro wins on install labor and outdoor placement. Don't mix families on the same bus without checking EG4's current compatibility guidance.

    The two boxes people misunderstand

Chargeverter is not an inverter. It's a 100A, 48V battery charger that turns any generator (or grid source) into a bulk charger. In a generator-backed off-grid system it decouples "generator quality" from "battery charging" — dirty generator power in, clean DC charge out.

GridBOSS is not an inverter either. It's a 200A service-entrance microgrid interconnection device (MID) — the smart switchgear that islands your home and coordinates solar, batteries, generator, and grid. Think of it as the EG4 ecosystem's answer to a smart electrical panel.

Common EG4 design mistakes (seen from the counter)

    • Undersizing the battery bank against inverter draw. A 6000XP pulling 6 kW wants at least 10 kWh of LFP behind it (a single 5.12 kWh rack module sags under heavy discharge). Rule of thumb: 1.5–2 kWh of battery per kW of expected continuous load, minimum.
    • Skipping the generator plan. Off-grid without a Chargeverter means a cloudy week becomes a dark week. Budget the generator and Chargeverter from day one, not after the first outage.
    • Ignoring PV voltage windows. XP inverters have defined MPPT voltage ranges; string the array so cold-weather open-circuit voltage stays inside spec. This is the number-one commissioning failure with DIY EG4 builds.
    • Mixing battery families casually. LL-S, LiFePower4, and PowerPro share chemistry but not always communications profiles — confirm the combination with EG4's current compatibility documentation before paralleling.
    • Forgetting firmware. EG4 ships meaningful firmware updates; a five-minute update at commissioning prevents half the quirks reported in owner forums.

    Frequently asked questions

    Is EG4 a good brand?

For off-grid and hybrid value, EG4 is one of the strongest price-to-capability ratios on the US market in 2026 — UL-listed current-generation hardware, a deep installer community, and pricing roughly 30–50% under premium brands. Support is documentation-and-community driven rather than white-glove.

What's the difference between the 18kPV and the 12000XP?

The 18kPV is a hybrid inverter (grid-interactive with backup); the 12000XP is an off-grid inverter with 12kW output and a larger 24kW PV input ceiling. Grid-tied with backup → 18kPV; true off-grid → XP.

How many EG4 batteries do I need for off-grid?

Daily kWh x days of autonomy, divided by usable kWh per unit. A 15 kWh/day home wanting 3 days needs ~45 kWh — three PowerPro 14.3 kWh units or nine 5.12 kWh rack modules.

Can the 6000XP run a whole house?

A modest, gas-appliance home — yes (6 kW continuous). Central air or electric cooking pushes you to the 12000XP or paralleled units.

    What does the Chargeverter do?

Charges a 48V battery bank at up to 100A (5,120W) from any generator or grid source — the standard way to add generator backup to an EG4 off-grid system.
