    BMS, Enclosure, and Build Philosophy

    EG4's BMS does the job contractors need: passive balancing, full protection suite, reliable closed-loop CAN profiles for the big inverter brands, and — on the LL line — self-heating cells that make unconditioned-space installs in cold climates viable. The enclosure is a functional 19-inch rack module; it belongs in a rack or a protected indoor location.

    Fortress builds toward installed permanence. The eVault is a floor-standing indoor cabinet with integrated bussing — no external rack, no exposed interconnects — engineered for the garage-wall installs that make up most residential ESS work. The BMS adds active balancing and cell-level monitoring with tighter long-term pack alignment. Neither approach is wrong; they're aimed at different job profiles. EG4 assumes a technically engaged owner or an installer managing the rack. Fortress assumes the system should look and behave like a permanent appliance for 15 years.

    Price Per kWh: What the Premium Buys

    At contractor pricing, EG4 lands around $0.20–0.25 per watt-hour; Fortress lands around $0.30–0.35. On a 20 kWh install that's a $2,000–3,000 delta. What it buys: the UL 9540 system listing, the appliance-grade enclosure, active balancing, and a support line staffed by people who will get on the phone with your electrician and walk a commissioning. What it does not buy: more watt-hours, different chemistry, or a longer warranty term. For margin-sensitive jobs, off-grid work, and customers who want maximum kWh per dollar, EG4 is the rational spec. For permitted whole-home ESS in strict jurisdictions and customers buying a set-and-forget appliance, Fortress earns its premium.

    Choose EG4 if: price per kWh drives the job; the install is off-grid, agricultural, or in a jurisdiction comfortable with UL 1973; the customer wants to scale capacity incrementally module by module; or you need self-heating cold-weather capability at value pricing.

    Choose Fortress if: the AHJ expects UL 9540 system listings; the customer wants a finished appliance-grade installation; you're pairing with an inverter on Fortress's certified list and want single-call support accountability; or the job values engineering-level manufacturer support over upfront cost.

The watt-hours and chemistry are equivalent — you're paying for listings, fit-and-finish, and support, not capacity.

    Can I mix EG4 and Fortress batteries in the same bank?

    No — never mix battery brands or models on the same DC bus. Different BMS firmware, charge profiles, and internal resistance cause imbalance and fault conditions even at identical nominal voltage. Standardize each battery bank on a single brand and model, and parallel identical units only.
