Monocrystalline vs Polycrystalline Solar Panel: Which is Best?

    We got into a fight about this at the counter last month. A contractor walked in wanting 30 polycrystalline panels for a barn roof because "they're cheaper and I'm not trying to win a beauty contest." Our lead estimator — who's been doing this since 2009 — told him he was making a $4,000 mistake. They went back and forth for twenty minutes. The contractor left with monocrystalline.

    Here's why. And when poly still makes sense.

    The Real Difference in 2026

    Monocrystalline and polycrystalline are both silicon photovoltaic cells. The difference is how the silicon is grown. Mono uses a single crystal ingot — think of it as one continuous silicon lattice. Poly uses multiple crystals melted together, which creates grain boundaries where electrons scatter.

    In practical terms:

    • Efficiency: Monocrystalline runs 19–22% in standard test conditions. Polycrystalline runs 15–17%. In 2026, with TOPCon n-type mono pushing past 22%, the gap is wider than ever.
    • Space: A 10kW system needs about 22–25 monocrystalline panels (440–460W each) or 30–34 polycrystalline panels (300–330W each). On a constrained roof, that matters.
    • Degradation: Mono degrades roughly 0.4–0.5% per year. Poly degrades 0.6–0.8% per year. Over 25 years, that's a 5–7% total output difference.
    • Temperature coefficient: Mono handles heat better. At 65°C on a Phoenix roof in August, a mono panel loses 10–12% of its rated output. A poly panel loses 14–16%. In hot climates, that compounds.
    • Price: In 2026, polycrystalline is basically clearance stock. We see it at $0.15–0.18/W wholesale when we can find it. Monocrystalline TOPCon is $0.20–0.28/W. The difference on a 10kW system is $500–1,000 — not nothing, but not the 40% savings it was a decade ago.

    When Polycrystalline Still Makes Sense

    We're not saying poly is dead. It's just niche now.

    Ground mount with unlimited space: If you've got 2 acres and no shade, poly works fine. The lower efficiency doesn't matter if you have room for 40 extra panels. At $0.15/W, the math can work for off-grid cabins, agricultural buildings, or remote pump stations where aesthetics don't matter.

    Budget-constrained DIY installs: If you're a homeowner installing your own system and every dollar matters, poly saves a few hundred bucks. Just know you're giving up 20–25% of your roof's generating capacity and you'll replace the system sooner.

    Extreme cold climates: Ironically, poly's higher temperature coefficient is less of a problem in cold climates. In northern Minnesota or Maine, panels rarely hit 40°C. The efficiency gap narrows in cold weather.

    When Monocrystalline Is the Only Answer

    Residential rooftops: Roof space is finite. Every square foot matters. A 6kW mono system fits where an 8kW poly system would overhang the gutters. In states with net metering caps — which is most of them now — maximizing per-roof output is how you hit zero bill.

    Commercial flat roofs: Structural loading limits mean fewer, higher-wattage panels are better. A 500kW system with 600W mono bifacial panels needs less racking, less ballast, and less labor than the equivalent poly system.

    High-temperature climates: Arizona, Texas, Nevada, inland California. We've measured panel surface temperatures at 72°C on a July afternoon in Phoenix. Mono's -0.35%/°C coefficient vs poly's -0.40%/°C doesn't sound like much, but it's 3–4% more annual kWh in those markets.

    Any financed or leased system: If the homeowner is paying $150/month for a solar lease, the installer needs to guarantee a production number. Mono's lower degradation rate and higher efficiency make that guarantee easier to hit. Poly is riskier for the financier.

    The 2026 Market Reality

    Here's the thing: most manufacturers stopped making polycrystalline panels in 2022–2023. The poly panels still on the market are old inventory, gray-market imports, or budget-tier manufacturers in Southeast Asia who haven't upgraded to TOPCon lines yet.

    We stock monocrystalline panels from Qcells, REC, Silfab, Jinko, VSUN, and Longi. We don't stock polycrystalline anymore — not because we have anything against it, but because our distributors stopped carrying it and the warranty support isn't there. If you buy a poly panel in 2026 and it fails in 2028, good luck finding the manufacturer.

    The one exception: we occasionally get clearance lots of poly panels from utility-scale projects that over-ordered. When that happens, we sell them at cost to agricultural customers with ground-mount space. If you're reading this and want us to flag the next lot, let us know.

    Bottom Line

    If you're a contractor quoting residential or commercial systems in 2026, spec monocrystalline. The price difference is minimal, the performance difference is real, and your customer will thank you in year 15 when their system is still producing at 90% instead of 80%.

    If you're doing your own off-grid ground mount and you find poly panels at $0.15/W, go for it. Just don't pretend it's the same product.
